A survey of professionals in the cybersecurity and risk assessment sector shows that they are very wary of the further spread of artificial intelligence and fifth-generation networks.

New risks

Cybersecurity and risk assessors are wary of the impending arrival of artificial intelligence and fifth-generation communications networks.  Many of them believe that they will bring with them many new threats.  This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted by the British organization Information Risk Management (IRM).

According to the overwhelming majority (86%) of experts surveyed by IRM, AI will force them to change their cybersecurity strategy over the next five years.  Moreover, AI technologies are already actively used to detect and prevent attempts to intrude into corporate networks, combat fraud and ensure secure user authorization.

While acknowledging that the use of AI technologies is no longer possible, experts note that attackers are already trying to use AI to carry out cyberattacks.

At least one such incident happened earlier in 2019: attackers used artificial intelligence technology to imitate the voice of a senior executive of one energy company in an extremely effective manner.  As a result, about 200 thousand euros were leaked to the account of cybercriminals.

Experts predict new threats from AI and 5G networks

In addition, experts suggest that attackers can use AI to automate attacks on a fundamentally new level, which, of course, will further increase the stakes.

Speed is not a panacea

5G networks can also be a source of problems, according to 83% of those surveyed.  Firstly, experts fear the growth of attacks on the Internet, secondly, that high-speed networks will increase the “attack surface”, and thirdly, that the software shells of equipment for fifth generation networks will be written without taking into account security requirements.

In October, the European Union published a 5G risk assessment report, which indicated that software vulnerabilities in the equipment of fifth-generation networks are a source of increased risk, even greater than for networks of previous generations.  In addition, due to new functions and architecture, some network components, in particular base stations, are more susceptible to attacks.  Finally, because 5G networks are expected to be used as backbones for many critical applications, their integrity and uptime is proving to be a challenge in itself.

The big commotion also raises the possibility that cyberattackers and intelligence agencies will try to compromise the software and hardware components of equipment for 5G networks for their own purposes.
